Speech of Hon. J.B. Weller, of California, in Defense of his Conduct While Boundary Commissioner
WELLER, JOHN B., Speech of Hon. J.B. Weller, of California, in Defense of his Conduct While Boundary Commissioner, and in Reply to the Charges of Ex-Senator Ewing. Delivered in the Senate of the United States, July 6, 1852. Washington: Congressional Globe Office, 1852. 13pp. Debound. Light foxing. Printed in two columns. Very good.
First edition. President Polk had appointed Weller chairman of the commission to fix the boundary between the United States and Mexico under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. He served as such until the Whig Zachary Taylor recalled him in 1850. Elected as a Democratic Senator from California, he responds here to the "low vulgarity" and "blackguardism" of the "Whig press," which had charged him with inefficiency and corruption. Much information on the activities of the Commission is included. The pamphlet is quite scarce.
