PIERCE, DONNA. New World Saints. A collection of 25 hand-colored prints in triptychs. From the work of Catherine Ferguson. With text by Spanish Colonial scholar Donna Pierce. And pochoir by Palace Press Staff. Santa Fe: Press of the Palace of Governors, 1995. 25 individual triptychs enclosed in a custom cloth box with latch. Beautiful illustrations. Fine.
A highly unusual, scarce and visually pleasing publication. The portfolio triptychs serve as shrines for the prints of saints whose popularity either traveled from the Old World to the New or originated in the Americas. Arced tops of the triptychs are handsomely embossed with a traditional scallop design and the outer leaves carry a biographical sketch or mythology from each of the saints found inside. Printed in a limited quantity of 150 copies.
