CUMMING, ALFRED. Indians on the Upper Missouri: Message from the President of the United States, Transmitting a Report in Regard to the Expedition Among the Indians on the Upper Missouri. [Washington?]: 1856. 15pp. Original printed stitched self-wrappers. Very good or better.
Wagner-Camp-Becker 273a: "Alfred Cumming, Superintendent of Indian Affairs, left St. Louis on June 6, 1855, aboard the steamer St. Mary to distribute supplies and to investigate the conditions of the tribes of the Missouri Basin, from the Omahas and Pawnees to the Sioux, Mandans, Gros Ventres, Assiniboins, Crows, and Blackfeet. He traveled up the Missouri River as far as the Great Falls, above Fort Benton, and returned to Saint Louis in January of 1856. His report is moderate and sympathetic toward the Indians and conveyed his belief that violence should be avoided in dealing with them."
